The 3 Keys To Growing A Successful YouTube Channel
1 : TIME
I’m going to start off right now and tell you that YouTube is a marathon, not a sprint. So many creators get discouraged because they have been uploading videos for a month and no one is watching.
Or maybe they are discouraged because they haven’t even been able to reach 100 subscribers.
I get it. I was there too. In the beginning I would upload a video and if I got 80 views that was considered really good.
It’s one thing if you want to start a YouTube channel “just for fun” with no expectations of growing an audience. It’s another thing if you desire to reach people who can relate to your content that you’re working so hard to create.
So if you want to grow your channel, just know that typically a channel will take a few months to really get off the ground. Unless you upload something that happens to go viral (it does happen!) you might be seeing low numbers for a long time.
But don’t get discouraged!
Just remember that this is part of the process. Nothing happens overnight. You have to be willing to dedicate the time in order to see results.
Think of it this way: if you upload 2 videos a week for 1 year, that will give you 104 videos on your channel. That’s 104 chances for someone to find your content and gives you time to practice being on camera, learn editing skills and find out what works for you and your audience.
2 : CONSISTENCY
Another complaint I hear from my mentees is that they uploaded 4 videos over the past 2 months and are wondering why no one is watching or subscribing.
You have to be consistent.
There’s really no huge secret to being consistent except for this: love what you do!
If you’re making video content that you love and can’t wait to create and share, it’s going to be a lot easier for you to keep up with your schedule and stay consistent on YouTube. And if you want the algorithm to start suggesting your videos to other people being consistent is a must!
The YouTube algorithm rewards people who consistently show up on the platform. It’s usually recommended to upload at least once a week, ideally twice a week if you have the time and can still create good quality videos.
Having a video schedule is also important to maintaining that consistency. Plan out your month based on which days you’re going to film, which days you’re going to edit, and which days you’re going to upload.
Just make sure that when you’re creating a schedule that it can be easily maintained by you while you meet all of the other responsibilities in your life. If you have a full-time job, a family, or you’re a student, make sure you take this into consideration before creating a very rigorous upload schedule.
If you try and do too much you’re going to hate it and you’re not gonna be able to maintain consistency or see the results that you want. So try and think as objectively as possible and plan for less rather than more.
It’s always better to spend a little extra time on a video than to try and squeeze in an extra video each week.
3 : PASSION
Successful YouTube channels are successful because they have unlocked the balance between creating content that their audience wants that ALSO MAKES THEM HAPPY. This is soooo important. I can’t stress this part enough. Like I said, YouTube is a long game and in order for you to stay dedicated you’re going to want to make sure you love what you do!
So rather than focusing on what your audience wants, you need to focus on the kind of content that YOU like. If not, you might get the subscribers from some trendy videos you made but it won’t be sustainable. You’re going to start to hate it. After all, building a YouTube channel takes a lot of hard work and TIME.
If you have a channel topic (niche) in mind, ask yourself if you can create 100+ videos on that topic and still be happy! If the answer is NO then I wouldn’t recommend it.
When it comes to my channel, the driving force behind creating my videos is because I want to share and save memories for myself and my family to enjoy in the future. That’s why I have a vlog channel rather than a topic based channel. The topic is my life and the videos are less of what I think people want to see and more of what I want to create, share and rewatch for the years to come.
It’s how I’ve been able to post nearly 600 videos on my channel over the past 3.5 years without thinking for a second that I want to quit! Even when my views were down. Even when was stuck at the same number of subscribers for 8 months. Even now that I have a baby to take care of. I. Don’t. Stop.
In fact, having Mia has made me want to keep vlogging even MORE! My life feels a little more “boring” now that I’m home with the baby everyday (also thanks to COVID-19) but in reality I know that months from now I’m going to be missing this time with my sweet little baby. These vlogs will be something I can cherish forever.
As cheesy as it sounds, the journey to every little milestone on my YouTube channel has been the best part. I’ve been able to create a community of subscribers who genuinely love watching our family. Some of those subscribers have become really good friends of mine. It’s the connections that you make with your subscribers that is important, not the amount of subscribers you have.
Of course, you can learn other tricks and strategies to creating killer content, but time, consistency and PASSION will always be the pillars of creating a successful YouTube channel.
